Florida bans Bitcoin – Wallets, mining rigs and clients are now illegal to use

Posted by Crypto on Jul 10, 2013. Florida has just passed a bill that bans the use of Bitcoin including Bitcoin wallets, rigs and clients. They were going after a ban on “Electronic Gambling Devices” but the bill actually effects Bitcoin and other services and devices that is not directly involved with Electronic Gambling. You can see the full text of the bill here (pdf). A summary of the bill:

(a) Receive or become entitled to receive any piece of money, credit, allowance, or thing of value, or any check, slug, token, or memorandum, whether of value or otherwise, which may be exchanged for any money, credit, allowance, or thing of value or which may be given in trade; or

(b) Secure additional chances or rights to use such machine, apparatus, or device, even though the device or system may be available for free play or, in addition to any element of chance or unpredictable outcome of such operation, may also sell, deliver, or present some merchandise, indication of weight, entertainment, or other thing of value. The term “slot machine or device” includes, but is not limited to, devices regulated as slot machines pursuant to chapter 551.

After the bill was passed, almost 1000 online internet cafes shut down immediately. One of the owners is now suing Florida.

Text from the bill:

[....] As amended, Section 849.16, Florida Statutes includes a presumption that any device, system, or network like the Plaintiff’s computers that displays images of games of chance is an illegal slot machine. - Source:

  1. This only mean one thing---the threat is on. Governments are banning any transaction with bitcoins because this is a major competition in the race. But the good news is, you can still freely gamble at bitcoin casino like Betcoin™. Probably, Florida is not yet after it.
